I was going to keep this to myself, but I’ve made it a rule to share my learnings with you, so here goes…

I see blog post after blog post with no pictures and it only takes a minute or two to find the perfect image to compliment your post if you know where to look.

In an ideal world, good writing alone would be enough to keep new readers on your site, but today we all suffer from information overload. Our attention spans have grown shorter. With so much information out there, we’ve all learned to take shortcuts. We’re no longer readers, we’re scanners. They say a picture says a thousand words. Adding pictures to your blog post will make it easier for your visitors to make a snap judgment to stick around.

For interesting, free pictures for your blog, click here. There’s more than 123 million photos you can use for free. You’ll want to filter by the Creative Commons-license (I’ve already done that for you in the link). What this means is that as long as you provide a link back to the author in your post, and you don’t alter the image in any way, you’re free to use the images guilt free. In the link I’ve provided you’ll see that I’ve sorted the results by interestingness, but you can also sort by the date of upload or by relevancy.

I always sort by interestingness, because that shows you the most visually interesting images first, so you don’t have to look through thousands of images to find one that pops.

If you know of another quick and easy place to find images and photos besides Flickr, please share.

Very helpful: thanks.
I use Wikimedia Commons.

Thanks, Neeti. I’ve got a question, though. How do you make sense of all the different CC licenses on Wikimedia?

Ye Gods! I didn’t know about the different CC licenses. What are they? Perhaps you could write about this?

I just take a picture from there and add a link to my post for picture credit.
